National Mounted Warrior Museum: free and public
The National Mounted Warrior Museum is outside the Fort Cavazos main gate at 105 Trooper Loop, Building 69000. Admission is free. No base access, visitor pass, or government ID is required. The museum has more than 12,000 square feet of permanent galleries on U.S. mounted warfare, unit histories, soldier stories, and interactive exhibits.
Hours are 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. It is closed Sunday through Tuesday and on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. It is about twenty minutes from La Finca.
Free trails close to the retreat
Ogletree Gap Park is in Copperas Cove, under ten minutes away. Its 4.7 miles of natural, unpaved multi-use trail cross cedar and oak groves and a historic town site. Some trail sections are advanced-mountain-bike-only, so follow signs. South Park has a free, flat, 0.7-mile paved trail beside a local creek.
Miller Springs Nature Center in Belton is a 260-acre preserve with more than ten miles of hiking and biking loops, wetlands, birdwatching, fishing, dog walking, and picnic areas. It is free, open 8 a.m. to dusk year-round, and about thirty minutes away. Chalk Ridge Falls Nature Area is another free choice, open 8 a.m.–8 p.m. year-round.
Markets and historic Lampasas
The Copperas Cove Thursday market is free to attend, running 4–7 p.m. from May through October at City Park. A separate community market is listed on the first Saturday of each month, 9 a.m.–noon, at 302 S 2nd Street. Downtown Killeen’s market is listed for Tuesdays, and another Killeen market operates one Saturday each month. Confirm a date before leaving.
The 1884 Lampasas County Courthouse anchors a National Register historic district. The research also identifies the nearby Keystone Square Museum, but does not independently verify current museum hours. Enjoy the square without promising that a particular interior will be open.
A nearly-free state park
Mother Neff State Park is about 35–40 minutes away. Admission is $2 per adult, and children twelve and younger enter free. The park has about 3.5 miles of trails through canyon and prairie, picnicking, geocaching, wildflower viewing, visitor-center exhibits, and a Junior Ranger program. Swimming and fishing are not permitted.
The gate is open 8 a.m.–8 p.m. daily. The visitor center is open 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and closes noon–1 p.m. on weekdays. Reservations are highly recommended because the park can reach capacity.
