The reason to make the drive
Gorman Falls is a 70-foot travertine waterfall inside Colorado Bend State Park. The self-guided route is about three miles round trip over rough, rocky terrain. It does not require a separate falls reservation, but every visitor still needs park admission and entry is capacity-limited. The park also has more than 35 miles of trails, fishing, Colorado River paddling, and swimming at Spicewood Springs.
This is not a polished overlook reached from a parking lot. Treat the route as an outdoor hike: wear shoes that can handle uneven rock, carry water, and leave enough daylight for the return. Those planning notes are practical rather than a promise about trail conditions; check the official park page on the day you go.
Admission, hours, and planning
Adult day use is $5; children twelve and younger enter free. Recorded park hours are 6 a.m.–10 p.m., with headquarters open 8:45 a.m.–4:15 p.m. Day-use passes can be booked up to thirty days ahead through ReserveAmerica. Weekends and holidays can fill, which makes an advance pass the sensible way to protect a long-drive day.
The park address is 1201 Colorado Park Road, Bend, Texas 76824. Before departure, use the official conditions page for closures and notices. If the park is full, do not count on arriving at the gate and improvising your way in.
Hunting-season closures can cancel the whole plan
Colorado Bend closes entirely on scheduled hunting dates in fall. The dates recorded during research were October 20–22, November 6–8, November 17–19, December 4–6, and December 15–17, but those dates change annually. They are examples of why a current check is mandatory, not dates to reuse forever.
Do not merely check whether the falls trail is open. Confirm that the entire park is open on your chosen day. A cabin weekend and a ninety-minute drive deserve that small bit of preparation.
Caves are a separate decision
Wild and adventure cave tours are operated by Nichols Outdoor Adventures and booked through cbcaves.com. The Discovery Tour was unavailable until further notice during research because vultures were nesting at the cave entrance. Other options may operate on weekends, but availability belongs to the concessionaire, not to the basic park pass.
In short: reserve park entry, check hunting closures, treat the falls as a rocky hike, and confirm any cave tour separately. Then return to La Finca for the part of the day that asks nothing from you.
